- Q: What does this app show
A: The app shows the position of the brightest stars and four planets in the night sky describing their azimuth and altitude. By using the internal compass the user can rotate their watch so that they can easily locate a star or planet by lining up their heading with its azimuth. The stars are chosen for their brightness and distribution in all four quarters of the sky. This selection is primarily suitable to users in the Northern Hemisphere between the 30°N and 60°N. - Q: What does the first view - Locate - do ?
A: The first view titled - Locate - shows the 4 planets and the 20 stars details. This lists the azimuth, altitude of each object and includes its Meridian Passage. If the object is visible this is indicated by the Above/Below Horizon indicator. - Q: What does the second view - Heading - do?
A: The second view titled - Heading - is used by rotating the watch left and right. As the heading changes it will find the nearest stars to your direction and then shows the various possible objects. The red/green ie port and starboard indicators allow the user to fine tune this direction. Finally the user looks at the selection and decides based on its altitude which star they are looking at. - Q: What does the third view - Estimating a Stars Altitude - do?
A: This is a simple aide-memoire to demonstrate how the user can use their fingers and hand to measure angles to determine a stars altitude. It is surprisingly accurate and fun. - Q: What time zone does the app use?
